Born and raised in Lake County, Ca, Joy earned her college degree in Natural Sciences from Santa Rosa College in CA, where she took Viticulture and Enology classes, as well as a number of winemaking and wine tasting classes. For her first job in the wine industry, she worked as a vineyard technician and cellar hand at a prestigious winery and vineyard in Lake County, and right away she knew she loved the wine making process. She then traveled to New Zealand to work a wine harvest at one of the largest wineries in Marlborough, NZ. Back in the States, she then worked several harvests at a custom crush winery in Napa Valley, CA, as a Cellar Hand, Lab Technician, and Vineyard Sampler. Joy was then asked to come back to work for the winery in Lake County, so she continued there assisting the winemaker for a few years. In 2023, Joy, her husband, and their son moved to Lubbock, TX to continue her career as the Winemaker for English Newsom Cellars.

Steve and Cindy Newsom began farming cotton and grain sorghum in Hockley County, Texas in 1989. Today the Newsom’s grow alfalfa, triticale (for hay), cotton, peanuts (conventional and organic) and wine grapes on approximately 3000 acres.

Since 2008, Steve and Cindy Newsom Vineyards have strived to consistently produce the finest quality wine grapes. In 2018, they began English Newsom Cellars with the goal to make premium quality, estate-grown wines. Our internationally award-winning wines are 100% Texas High Plains and celebrate our commitment to sustainable agriculture and family farming. The Newsom family strives to consistently produce the finest quality winegrapes for the best Texas Wineries to make premium quality wines.

Mariah was born and grew up in Lubbock, Texas. She received a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from Texas Tech University and went on to complete her Masters in Interdisciplinary Studies combining Chemistry, Business and Viticulture. In her final semester at Texas Tech, she participated in an internship with Llano Estacado Winery. During this time, she discovered her true passion for wine. Next, she spent three years as the Manager for a wine lab in Brownfield, Texas, where she became very familiar with different grape varieties, winemaking styles/methods and storage techniques. She was also in charge of Quality Control for the bottled projects. At the end of 2019, Mariah joined the team at English Newsom Cellars as the Tasting Room Manager. She enjoys familiarizing others with English Newsom wines as well as continuing her own wine education.

Farming and developing world class vineyards is Keegan Newsom’s passion. He manages 21 varietals on 100 acres in Hockley County, Texas. Both he and his dad have a reputation as a supplier of quality winegrapes.

He started working in the vineyards at age 14. In high school he realized he wanted to work with his Dad and follow in his footsteps. His philosophy in growing grapes is to treat each varietal and each site unique to the soil type, water availability and then adjust to what Mother Nature gives us each year with the weather.
